ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University men's basketball squad shot a season-high 61.1 percent from the floor in picking up a 92-89 Peach Belt Conference road victory at Flagler College on Saturday afternoon in St. Augustine, Fla.
The Pirates (8-15, 5-11 PBC) kept its postseason hopes alive with the win over the Saints (10-12, 4-11 PBC), drawing even with Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke in the win column for the fourth and final spot in the PBC East Division.
Armstrong hit 33-of-54 shots from the floor for 61.1 percent in the victory, its highest shooting percentage in a game since the Pirates hit 67.3 percent in an 88-65 win at Columbus State on January 22nd, 2009.
Armstrong trailed by eight points early, 18-10, as Flagler's Matt Conway hit a four-point play with 13:15 left in the first half for the Saint advantage. The Pirates took the lead, 31-30, on a Darius Morales basket with 5:38 to go in the first half and eventually would take a one-point lead at the break, 46-45. Morales would notch 16 points in the first half, surpassing his career high in just the first 20 minutes of the contest.
The Pirates would stretch the lead to eight, 61-53, on a Kenny Bellinger II three-pointer with 15:10 to go in the contest, then extend that lead to 13 points, 77-64, with 6:59 left. Flagler would cut the lead to two points, 81-79, on two Keith Matthews free throws with 1:53 remaining, but Armstrong would hit eight free throws over the final two minutes to clinch the victory.
Morales would finish his career night by hitting 11-of-15 shots from the floor en route to a game-high 24 points, while Eric Eversley would notch his eleventh double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Emmanuel Tiluscar chipped in 12 points and Hichem Benayad-Cherif added 11 points.
Flagler placed five players in double figures, led by Matthews' 21 points and 15 points from Adam Jones. Conway and Dennis Diaz added 14 points apiece and Jarrod Oxendine added 13 points.
The Pirates return to action on Monday, February 17, hosting Lander in a 7:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest at Alumni Arena. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 12th, but was postponed due to winter storm Pax.
