Black History Quiz Bowl combines STEM and Civil Rights in America

Posted: Updated:
WINTERVILLE, N.C. - Hundreds of kids traded their Saturday for a day at the 2014 Teen Summit.

The all day event featured workshops, roundtables, and the annual Black History Quiz Bowl.

This year organizers combined the youth summit and quiz bowl into an all day affair.

More than 10 teams from all over Pitt County tested their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and black history.

"We're trying to focus more [and] encourage African American kids to get involved in STEM, so we are excited that we could incorporate that in our study this year," said Chairwoman Mary Maultsby.

Event organizers say quiz bowl has been attracting large crowds for more than 20 years.

9 On Your Side anchor Angela Green served as Mistress of Ceremony. Meteorologist Dontae Jones also lent his voice as one of the judges.

Saturday’s quiz bowl was sponsored by the Iota Kappa Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the city of Greenville, Friends of Sheppard Memorial Library, 100 Black Men of Eastern North Carolina, and George Washington Carver Library.

Following the quiz bowl scholarships and essay contest winners were announced.
