STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern trailed by 13 at the break and cut the lead to just five points in the second half on Saturday against Davidson, but 30 points from Jelani Hewitt wouldn’t be enough as the Eagles dropped an 88-73 decision to the Wildcats in the final regular season SoCon meeting between the schools. The Eagles are on the road this Thursday night with a trip to face the Chattanooga Mocs.

“I’m happy with the effort,” said Head Coach Mark Byington. “We played smart basketball and that is one of the important things for us. We did a great job to cut the lead to five in the second half. Overall, there were more positives than negatives for us and we proved that we are a better basketball team then we were a few weeks ago.”

Prior to the game, Jelani Hewitt and Tre Bussey were honored for becoming the 40th and 41st members of the 1,000 point club at Georgia Southern.

Georgia Southern (11-16, 4-8 SoCon) went on a 12-4 run to open the second half, cutting Davidson’s (15-11, 11-1 SoCon) lead to just five with 16:49 left in the game. That run included eight of Hewitt’s game-high 32 points. It was Hewitt’s largest scoring haul in league play this season as he matched a career high with six buckets from downtown.

Davidson stretched the lead back to 16 with 10:57 remaining, but another Eagle run got the lead to eight points with 5:10 left in the contest. The visitors rattled off 11-straight points over the next three minutes to put the game to bed.

Brian Holmes chipped in 11 points with three assists while Tre Bussey added 10 points and four rebounds. Hewitt was also the leading rebounder for the Eagles with eight boards in addition to three steals.

Davidson was paced by 25 points from Brian Sullivan who went 5-for-10 from the bonusphere. Tom Droney added 14 points and De’Mon Brooks had 13 while Chris Czerapowicz posted 11 points in the win for the Wildcats.

Next up for Georgia Southern is a trip to Chattanooga for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday inside The Roundhouse. The Eagles are back at home next Saturday for Senior Night with tipoff against Elon set for 2 p.m.
