Wake Co. year-round students use Saturday as make-up day

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Students at Wake County schools missed school for most of the week due to the snow and ice that fell starting Feb. 14. Some of those students made their way to school Saturday as a make-up day.

"I think they'll wake up after 10 o'clock," said Brier Creek Elementary Principal Sandy Chambers.

Students only went in for three and a half hours but it counted as full day. Wake students on tracks one, two and four had class Saturday.

"With the three and a half hours, it's just core instruction. We don't have lunch or recess or specials," Chambers said.

It was Olympic Day at Briar Creek, allowing students to dress up as Olympians. Mary Ritterpusch wore a gold medal around her neck.

"It's really fun today. It's just a hangout day," the 10-year-old said.

Even the principal got in on the fun.

"I've got on my Olympic outfit. Just something cool to make it fun," Chambers said.

Chambers said kids on a year-round schedule are used to having breaks sprinkled in through the year.

"Kids do have three weeks at times to track out," she said. "They come back and it could be a little slow to start, but  then they'll pick right up."

The state is looking into whether students will have to make up all the days missed  due to the winter weather.

Gov. Pat McCrory said an announcement could be coming by next week.
