TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

With the tax season underway, the IRS is reporting that this year's filings are outpacing last year.

So far, more than 27 million returns have been received. That's 2.5 percent more than last year, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Almost 96 percent of the returns filed were done so electronically this year, the agency said.

However, not everyone is having an easy time with the processing of their refund.

We always appreciate when you bring issues to our attention, and this week a WFLA News Channel 8 viewer asked us on Facebook about a confusing message they received about their tax refund.

Jennifer Higgs-Leone said that despite a message she received informing her that her refund would be deposited into her account on Feb. 6, the money never showed up in her account.

Jennifer said she checked the Where's My Refund? tool on the IRS.gov website and it showed an alert that her refund was being delayed. Along with the message was the code "1121".

We checked into her concern and wanted to share what we learned about the pesky "1121" code.

In a statement to WFLA News Channel 8, the IRS said:

"A very small percentage of taxpayers may see a 1121 reference number if they check Where’s My Refund? after they initially were provided a projected refund date by the tool."

A spokesperson for the IRS said the agency is aware of the situation. They did not have a precise number of people who have received the code, noting only that, "We do believe this is very limited in scope, especially when compared to the numbers of returns and refunds processed so far."

Here's what you need to know if you get the 1121 code:

  • The IRS says the 1121 code doesn't mean you're getting audited.
  • Your return is still being worked by the agency.
  • If the IRS needs more information it will contact you, usually by mail.
  • You should keep checking the website for a refund date.

The IRS says it works hard to issue refunds as quickly as possible, but as part of its effort to prevent improper payments, some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, such as when a return includes errors, is incomplete, or needs further review. The IRS says it apologizes for any confusion or inconvenience.
