New York, NY -

After keeping quiet, Veteran NBC News Special Correspondent Tom Brokaw is opening up about his cancer diagnosis.

Doctors first broke the news to Brokaw last August while he was at the Mayo Clinic. He was diagnosed with myeloma, a cancer that affects the blood cells in the bone marrow. As devastating a pill as this potentially terminal diagnosis can be, Brokaw says he and his doctors are hopeful about his treatment.

He revealed the following statement on Tuesday:

"With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come."

"I remain the luckiest guy I know."

"I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter."

Brokaw has been a part of the NBC News team since 1966, and he has not let his cancer treatment keep him from working. NBC officials point out that Brokaw has kept busy on projects such as a two-hour documentary on the assassination of JFK; appearances on "TODAY," "Nightly News with Brian Williams," "Meet the Press" and MSNBC. He is also contributing to NBC Sports coverage of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
