Officials expect Duke-Carolina to be played

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A major storm sweeping across North Carolina is not expected to keep the Duke-North Carolina basketball game from being played.

The Blue Devils play at the Tar Heels Wednesday night at the Smith Center at 9 p.m. The storm is expected to spread snow and ice across the state Wednesday, making travel treacherous.

But the game is expected to be played.

Steve Kirschner, senior associate athletic director for communications at UNC, said the ACC policy is that the game is to be played if both teams and two officials can safely make it to the arena.  Duke University is only about eight miles from Chapel Hill, and Kirschner said game officials often come in the night before a game.

Kirschner also said the ACC doesn't make decisions on games until at least 24 hours before the game.

Jon Jackson, associate director of athletics at Duke, said the Blue Devils are planning to leave for Chapel Hill Wednesday at 7 p.m. Jackson said Duke may leave earlier if necessary.

"We're going to get there," Jackson said.

Weather has impacted ACC games in Chapel Hill before. In 1994, UNC played the University of Maryland in the Smith Center on a snowy.

In 2000, the Maryland-at-UNC game was delayed one day because of a heavy snow. The doors were opened to anyone who could make to the game, and a heavy rush of students led to a raucous atmosphere at the game. The intensity of having the students close to the court led Carolina to add risers for students down by the court the next year.

Moving ACC games is rare but it does happen. In 1991, for example, the N.C. State at North Carolina basketball game was delayed even though the teams, and thousands of fans, were already at the Smith Center. Still, the game was moved back because the Gulf War began that night.
