RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina Democratic Party's communications director resigned Monday, a day after the state party executive director was abruptly fired, WNCN confirmed.

Micah Beasley announced his resignation in a letter to state party Chair Randy Voller Monday.

In the letter, Beasley cited "recent events" as the reason for his resignation. Sunday, Robert Dempsey, the former executive director of the state Democratic Party, was fired.

Party insiders told WNCN Monday that they were shocked at Dempsey's dismissal and were kept in the dark about it. They believe it was due to disputes in leadership and direction between Voller and Dempsey on issues such as how campaigns should be run.

"We live and die by the sword in this business," Beasley said Monday. "[I am] Proud to both make a stand for what's right and my record at the North Carolina Democratic Party over the past year."

The sudden removal of Dempsey and resignation of Beasley are the latest in a string of public troubles for the state Democratic Party that reach back to before Voller arrived in early 2013. The party is trying to rebound after losing the General Assembly to Republicans in 2010 and the governor's office in 2012 to GOP Gov. Pat McCrory.

Voller tried to calm the party faithful in an email Monday, saying that on Monday morning the doors of the party headquarters "opened as usual for the business of electing Democrats to serve the people of North Carolina."

The Democrats underwent internal turmoil in 2012 when a male employee accused party executive director Jay Parmley of sexual harassment. Parmley resigned from his job but denied the allegations. Top Democratic elected officials called on then-Chairman David Parker to resign. He offered his resignation in May, but a majority of party regulars declined to accept it.

Parker didn't seek another two-year term in 2013.
