Thomas Greene Bethune
The first pianist and composer of African descent to gain fame in the U.S. and to perform at the White House was Thomas Greene Bethune. Bethune was born outside of Columbus, GA. He was often billed as "Blind Tom". In addition to the piano he would master the coronet, French horn, and the flute; obtaining a repertoire of 7,000 songs Bethune was a child prodigy who in his early years would be a hired out musician in Savannah in the 1800s.
