East Columbus residents create neighborhood watch group

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - A group of concerned citizens in an East Columbus community is hoping they can help curb crime with their neighborhood watch program. News Threes Naomi Keitt sat down with some members of the newly formed group Saturday and says explains their plan for the Wesley Heights area.

"We're not there to replace the police department. They do a great job. God bless them. We're there to help them. We're there to help each other," said Jeffrey Nix.

After a series of burglaries in the Wesley Heights area of East Columbus, Jeffrey Nix decided enough was enough.

"She got broken into in broad daylight. Nobody saw or heard a thing. I was home all day. My neighbor was home all day, and it was so brazen it shocked me," said Nix.

Other residents of the community have experienced similar break ins.

"I just thought it was time for us to come together. Enough is enough. Take back our neighborhood," said Robert Day.

"It helps neighbors understand that these people getting together really care about what goes on around here and that's going to help draw more people into the care circle," said Alfred G. Weaver.

At the group's inaugural meeting at Wesley Heights Elementary School, they assigned some block captains who are responsible for certain areas of the neighborhood. Alfred Weaver walks the neighborhood every day to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

"A car in the neighborhood idling without lights on or a car that's just driving real slow with maybe their parking lights on, things of that nature," said Weaver.

The group has a mapped area of the community they patrol and are hoping it eventually extends to all of East Columbus. If you're interested in learning more about the group you can email Jeffrey at info@whecol.org or follow at https://www.facebook.com/#!/wesleyheightswatch.
