Rubber Fire Sending Up Huge Plumes of Smoke in Downtown Savannah

Posted: Updated:

A fire is tearing through a warehouse on port property located at 950 West River Street. Plumes of black smoke can be seen billowing out from the warehouse from all around downtown Savannah.

SCMPD officials say that if you do not need to be outside, stay inside.

Officials with the GA Ports Authority says this warehouse was holding crude rubber for tire manufacturing around the country.

Savannah Police say the fire has stopped traffic on West Bay Street between West Lathrop and Fahm streets and has greatly slowed traffic on the Talmadge Bridge.

Our crew on the scene says that motorists can continue west at MLK Boulevard but still have to turn at Fahm Street.

Savannah Fire and Rescue is working the fire. Drivers should avoid the area.

The Department of the Air Force is sending in the 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia Air National Guard to respond to the fire.  They will be sending four firefighters and a P-19 Airport Rescue fire-fighting vehicle along with a foam trailer.
