MCSD Superintendents lays out 120 day assessment

Posted: Updated:
After months of assessing the Muscogee County School District, Superintendent David Lewis laid out his plan for the future of the school system. At his meeting Friday morning there were 6 priorities on the assessment. Lewis' plan spans over the next 10 years and his main goal is to provide high quality education for all students across the district.

For 4 months since Lewis' arrival in Muscogee County, he's gone from school to school surveying teachers, administrators, and staff about the district. The first priority listed in his report focuses on full option graduation. Lewis says students should be able to go to college, technical school or enter the workforce fully prepared after high school. He says improving graduation rates starts when students are younger.

"Early childhood education, that's the first best intervention we can get. Then assuring we're going to have students proficient by the 3rd grade in literacy and math," said Lewis.

The Superintendent does have a plan for students who are struggling in these areas.

"Regrouping those students within a school and then based on data, assign the best teacher in that school and then paying them more money because they're going to have to work with a more challenging population. Kids who have a greater need," said Lewis.

A uniform reading program has already been approved and the Superintendent says a similar math program is in the works. To improve graduate rates Lewis' immediate goal is to develop an Early Warning System to track student milestones in order to keep teachers and parents informed and have graduation coaches within each region.

Lewis is proposing 3 regions, east, central and west, to get rid of the north south divide across the school district and equip regional chiefs to monitor student progress.
