State Rep. Calvin Smyre to Speak with Area Youth

SAVANNAH, GA -

This Saturday, area young people are invited to take part in a private conversation with State Representative Calvin Smyre. The event is being hosted by the City of Savannah and is a part of its Youth & Civic Engagement initiative.

Smyre, one of the longest serving legislators in the state general assembly, replaces Ambassador Andrew Young as guest speaker. Young is unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.

Rep. Smyre was elected to the state general assembly in 1974. He was appointed assistant floor leader in the 1983 and 1987 legislative session, making him the first African American leader of the House since Reconstruction. In 1998, he was elected the first African American Chairman of the Democratic Party's state legislative caucus.
