Zombie Bees Threaten Honeybee Population

Posted: Updated:
Riverton, Vermont -

It sounds like the plot of a science fiction movie but it's real. Scientists say Zombie Bees are a threat to America's bee population.

A parasitic fly is creating what San Francisco State University researchers are calling zombie bees.     It sounds weird but what happens is the fly lays an egg in the stomach of the

honey bee.   That causes the honeybee to behave erratically, doing things like flying at night, they eventually die.

Before they die the insects behave so strangely that it scientists have dubbed them Zombie bees.

There is no known way to prevent the bees from becoming infected.
