Students head to court for mock trial

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - If you think law is only practiced by professionals, think again.

Ten high school mock trial teams competed today at the Pitt County Courthouse.

Each team took turns arguing the prosecution and defense sides of the case.
Practicing lawyers say it was good to see young people getting involved in law so early.

"It's good to see kids that are involved in our court system not as defendants," said Phil Entzminger, Assistant District Attorney for Pitt County. "It's good to see them involved early, getting to know what an attorney does and how an attorney should act in court. This program increases their public speaking skills as well as their critical thinking skills."

The winning team will represent the area in the state competition later this month in Raleigh. They'll have a chance of representing North Carolina in the national competition.
