Young Women in Savannah Get Interested in Engineering

SAVANNAH, GA -

Young women in our area are learning about some career fields that hold a lot of opportunity for their gender. Hundreds of middle school and high school girls packed the gym at Woodville Tompkins High School to learn about engineering.

Students were able to talk to local employers and universities about how they can shine in what is traditionally a male dominated field.

9th grade student, De'Yana Hines, said she wants to be an engineer because you can make your ideas a reality.

"It's interesting how everything works and how everything is wired and that you can make objects do stuff that you want to do that normally you wouldn't see every day," said Hines.

According to the United States Census Bureau, while women make up nearly half of the workforce, they only made up 26 percent of careers in science, technology, engineering and math in 2011.
