Thurgood Marshall College Fund makes ECSU pledge

Posted: Updated:
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is pledging $150,000 to help students at Elizabeth City State University graduate.

University of North Carolina President Tom Ross announced the pledge Friday. The scholarship money will be available to juniors or seniors who need financial aid to graduate. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be in good standing at the school.

Ross says many ECSU students are low-income and are the first in their families to attend college. He says it's a real challenge for them to pay for college.

The scholarship fund will be available beginning March 2014 thought the spring 2015 semester. The TMCF Scholars program will be funded by TMCF and North Carolina-based Lowe's.

The fund is named for the U.S. Supreme Court's first black justice.
