LEE COUNTY, VA (WJHL) -

Lee County deputies arrested an escaped convict Monday afternoon, after he reportedly fled the Lee County courthouse Friday.

According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office news release, Jeremy Mitchell, 36, was arrested in Big Stone Gap around 4 p.m. after a tip led deputies to the home of a friend of Mitchell’s in the area.

Wise and Lee County deputies were on scene to conduct the search of the home where they found Mitchell.

Mitchell, convicted of malicious wounding and unlawful wounding Friday afternoon in the Lee County courthouse, reportedly went to the bathroom around 2:30 p.m. and then fled the courthouse.

Deputies said they spotted Mitchell around 7 p.m. that night in the Olinger area, but said Mitchell ran into the nearby woods and they lost track of him.

Investigators also sent a tracking dog and helicopter out to help locate Mitchell, but were unsuccessful.

Sheriff Gary Parsons said the WCSO, the Big Stone Gap and Appalachia police departments, the Virginia State Police and members of the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force and the U.S. Marshall Service, assisted in the locating Mitchell.
