Pitt and Carteret counties get special help in food stamp backlog

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Department of Health and Human Services in North Carolina set up two centers in Pitt and Carteret counties to help get through unprocessed food stamp applications.

It also set up nine more centers in the state on Tuesday.

DHHS could loose funding from the federal government if it doesn't process over 20,000 claims by February 10th.

The USDA threatened to pull funding starting in March.

Last week, DHHS issued a memo to all county divisions calling the backlog and "all hands on deck" type of situation.

In the memo setting up the new process centers, the department estimates Pitt County with be through the backlog applications by February 5th.
Counties like Guilford and Cumberland are estimated to be through by February 4th.
