Bubba the Ram sold for $300

ROUGEMONT, N.C. -

Bubba the Ram has been sold to an animal sanctuary organization for $300.

Bubba, who ran free in the Triangle before being captured Dec. 10, was auctioned off Friday morning at Elodie Farms in Rougemont. According to a news release, the winning bid was submitted by local animal rescuers.

An organization named Modern South put out a news release saying Red Dog Farm in Greensboro arranged for a foster home, is providing veterinary care, and will find a suitable adopter. He is available for adoption through Red Dog Farm. Anyone who adopts Bubba will have to agree not to use him for commercial purposes and not to sell or transfer him.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office was hoping to start the bidding at $850 to get back some of the cost of keeping Bubba in temporary quarters.

"The $300 that he sold for will help offset the cost, but ultimately the county is out about $500," said Paul Sherwin of the Durham County Sheriff's Office.

The animal, which what some say is a rare breed of sheep called Barbados Mouflon, had amused workers in the Triangle and residents around Durham after random spottings began in August.

Dave Artiguees of Elodie Farms called him "gentle but skiddish."

"A sweet, scared boy that needs a home. That's how I'd describe him," Artigues said. "He needs to be with his own kind. He needs to feel like he can range and roam around and eat what he wants and not be so trapped."
