Columbus drivers brave icy roads after winter storm

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The snow and ice on the roads have made it hard for many people in Columbus to get around, and the Georgia Department of Transportation is still hard at work to make all major highways passable.

Since Tuesday night cars have been slipping and sliding all over the roads. Things got a little better Wednesday afternoon as some of the ice melted, but conditions are still difficult in many locations.

The local salt reservoir for the DOT trucks was full on Monday, but Wednesday it was nearing empty as the trucks constantly came back for more. One driver said they worked through the night, but their major concern was highways, leaving the city's mere two sand spreaders to deal with the rest of the streets.

Public works director Pat Biegler says they may need to ramp up their resources to prepare for future storms. "If we continue to see some bad weather," she says, "we might want to consider some of that. It takes special storage. It takes equipment that we don't have."

For the icier, more dangerous roads public works couldn't get to, police put up barricades, b
ut some brave drivers chose to ignore those.

Others simply left their cars when the conditions got to be too much. CPD has not confirmed an exact number of roads that are closed, but say public works is working on getting to all of them as soon as they can.

Since the storm began Georgia State troopers have responded to 22 car accidents with 9 injuries reported in the Columbus area, and many more people have had close calls.

With the snow and ice freezing over again Wednesday night, police are definitely still warning everyone to stay off the streets if at all possible.
