Snow day in the Triangle means fun for some, work for others

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. -

As DOT crews worked hard Wednesday to clear roads, folks in neighborhoods around the area balanced clean-up with snow-related fun time.

Construction equipment was pressed into service Wednesday by the Department of Transportation to help clear the snow and ice -- but the ice wasn't confined to the roads.

It was so cold that the salt treatment froze up inside some DOT trucks WNCN encountered, forcing their drivers to fix the problem.

"You salt the road, then you let it work, then salt it again," explained DOT supervisor David Pleasants as he broke up the salt in the DOT truck. "During the process, if it stays in there too long it'll freeze up and this is the only way to get it out."

Until those secondary roads could be cleared, walking was the best way to travel. On other roads, folks were four-wheeling as best as they could.

"Sometimes it slides out from under you," said Mike Prevost, who was driving an ATV. "Just take it slow and easy."

With schools canceled and many business closed, many neighbors were working together to get the roads and driveways into some sort of drivable condition.

"I'm helping a neighbor out. I put the kids to work as well," said Steve Minter as he helped clear a neighbor's driveway. "So we'll knock our yard out next."

But not everyone worked on their day-off -- there was plenty of sledding being done, snow angels being made and basketball being played.

"You got to find the ice on the ground," some kids playing basketball said. "It makes it bounce like it's regular ground."
