The Dangers of Ice Storms

WINTER STORM 2014... are you excited, afraid or unimpressed?

All evening I have seen tons of posts on facebook.  From snow videos to snow T-shirts to snow jokes, we may not agree on the emotion, but we are at least all talking about it.

And we all need to know this.  ICE is in the forecast, and it is dangerous.

Ice can be one of the most dangerous and destructive winter weather events.  Even a thin coating of ice can be a nightmare.

Here are some ICE STORM FACTS.

1.  Ice can increase the weight of branches by 30 times.

2.  A 1/2 inch accumulation on power lines can add 500 pounds of extra weight.

3.  An ice storm can knock out power to thousands.

If you see an accumulation of 1/4 inch or less, expect your windshield to coated.  Bridges will be tricky, and light ice could form on trees.  Travel can be extremely dangerous.

If you see an ice accumulation of 1/4 to 1/2 inch, this amount starts to damage trees and power lines.  Expect widespread tree and power line damage.  Roads become impassable or dangerous.

If you see widespread ice accumulations greater than 1/2 inch, the damage is crippling.  This causes severe tree damage, and power outages may last for days.
