SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 17-ranked Montevallo men's basketball team notched an 82-71 Peach Belt Conference victory over host Armstrong Atlantic State University on Saturday afternoon as the Pirates celebrated Military Appreciation Day at Alumni Arena.
The win was the fourth straight for the Falcons (15-2, 8-2 PBC), while Armstrong (6-12, 3-8 PBC) suffered its fourth straight defeat.
A tough defensive first half saw the Falcons break open a two-point game late in the period as Montevallo ended the half on a 18-7 run over the final eight minutes to take a 39-28 lead into halftime.
The nationally-ranked Falcons maintained that cushion until five minutes left in the contest, when a three-pointer by senior Hichem Benayad-Cherif cut the gap to six points, 65-59. A basket by the Falcons' Orlando Brazier pushed the cushion back to eight, 67-59, and the Pirates committed turnovers on the next three possessions, allowing Montevallo to build the lead back to double digits and close out the win.
Armstrong placed five players in double figures on the afternoon, led by junior Montel Baines' 14 points. Senior Eric Eversley notched his PBC-leading ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Benayad-Cherif finished with 12 points and junior Emmanuel Tiluscar added 11 points. Junior Kyle Callanan contributed 11 points and nine assists.
Playing without leading scorer Troran Brown, the Falcons were led by Brazier's season-high 20 points and Shykeem Jackson's 15 points. Da-Juan Cooper added 10 points as well for Montevallo.
In celebration of Military Appreciation Day, members of the Wounded Warrior Project joined the Pirates in the locker room and on the floor prior to lineups and all current and former members of the military and their families were recognized at halftime. The Pirate coaches and players also wore commemorative camouflage warmup shirts before the game and on the bench.
Armstrong returns to action on Thursday, January 30th, visiting GRU Augusta for a 7:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest in Augusta, Ga.
