Hewitt, Bussey Reach 1,000, but Eagles Fall 74-64 to Wofford

STATESBORO, GA. STATESBORO, Ga. – Karl Cochran scored 25 points, and Wofford shot 50 percent from the field to earn a 74-64 Southern Conference men's basketball victory over Georgia Southern Thursday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.

Jelani Hewitt netted 18 points, and Tre Bussey scored 13 as the duo each reached the 1,000-point mark for their respective careers. Hewitt reached the milestone with a pair of free-throws 6:34 into the contest, while Bussey notched his 1,000th point with a free throw 7:19 into the second stanza.

"It's a great accomplishment for those guys, but I know they wanted to win," said Georgia Southern coach Mark Byington. "It's something they'll come back and remember."

Angel Matias collected 13 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles (9-11, 2-3 SoCon), and Marvin Baynham finished with six points and six boards.

Cochran was 8-of-16 from the floor for the Terriers (9-10, 4-3 SoCon) and made 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Spencer Collins scored 18, and Eric Garcia netted 15. Lee Skinner chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.

Wofford held Georgia Southern to 30 percent shooting in the first half while building a nine-point lead at the break.

"They really make you work, and you have to have patience to be able to break them down," said Byington. "Early on, we were just too impatient. We tried to make plays that weren't there. In the second half, we learned from it. I thought we had a chance to come back and win the game, but there were a couple stops and a couple rebounds we couldn't get that were important."

Leading by one point late in the first half, the Terriers used a 12-2 spurt to open a 35-24 advantage on a Cochran layup in transition. Hewitt hit a pair from the charity stripe on the Eagles' next trip down the floor and Wofford led 35-26 at halftime.

A 15-6 Wofford in the second stanza grew the lead to 17 points on a Cochran jumper with 12:09 to go. Trailing 65-48, Hewitt scored seven points in a 15-5 Georgia Southern run, and Bussey's layup cut the margin to 70-63 with two minutes left.

The Eagles got two defensive stops but could not convert on the other end until Brian Holmes made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, making the score 70-64 with a minute left. The Eagles were forced to foul, and Cochran sank all four of his free-throws to seal the win.

The Eagles return to action Saturday as they travel to Davidson for a 7 p.m. contest in Belk Arena.
