McCrory plans to address substance abuse among college students

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Health directors from around North Carolina  gathered in North Raleigh Thursday for the annual state health directors conference.

"We understand the demands and crisis you are under every day - thank you," Gov. Pat McCrory told the crowd.

McCrory said one new initiative he wants to unveil is one to address binge drinking and addiction in colleges.

He said he feels strongly about addiction and that it is destroying society, families and individuals.

He plans to continue working with health care professionals and roll out a college wellness program in the near future that would educate students on long term affects of potential abuse of alcohol and drugs.

McCrory did not give specifics but the North Carolina General Assembly is not scheduled to return until May.

McCrory did say that the state's next next director of the Division of Public Health will be Rear Adm. Penelope Slade-Sawyer. Slade-Sawyer will start March 3.

Slade-Sawyer has previously been in charge of the disease prevention and health promotion office with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Laura Gerald resigned from the post in July.

Rough Weather Causes Tree To Collapse onto House

Our spate of nasty spring weather this weekend didn't just bring rain into the picture. In some parts of our immediate area wind was also a major part of the weather scene. A good example of this is the house in Liberty County that was walloped by a tree. Apparently the house, located in the 4700 block of East Ogelthrope Highway was damaged when a massive tree fell on it. Neighbors believe heavy winds caused the tree to topple onto the building. The good news here is no one was injured. But t...
