RALEIGH, N.C. -

Health officials say 33 people have died as a result of the flu this season.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reports that 33 people have died as of Wednesday afternoon. There were five flu-related deaths last week.

Of the death, 15 were between 25 and 49 years old, nine were between 50 and 64, eight were 65 or older, and 1 was between zero and 4 years old.

Wednesday, a child from Alamance County died from the flu, although DHHS says that death was not included in the most recent figures.

Flu activity has been widespread in North Carolina since mid-December. High levels of flu activity are expected to continue over the coming weeks as flu season typically peaks during January and February.

DHHS says the flu vaccination is the most effective treatment against the flu.

The flu vaccine is widely available and protects against the strains of flu circulating this year, including H1N1, the most common flu strain so far this year.
