Georgia unemployment rate dips to 7.4 percent in December

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 7.4 percent in December, down two-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 7.6 percent in November, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The rate was 8.7 percent in December a year ago.

The rate dropped primarily because of seasonal hiring in retail trade, transportation and warehousing.

Georgia added about 90,000 jobs in December, a 2.3 percent increase since December 2012. Most of the gains came in professional and business services, trade and transportation, leisure and hospitality, education and health services and construction. Government lost about 5,100 jobs in the past year.
