Four Cars Stolen From Jasper Co. School District

Posted: Updated:

A crime spree on Jasper County School District property lands four people in behind bars.

Thieves stole Jasper County School cars and took them on a joyride Tuesday night.

"They came out and stole four of the districts support vehicles," said Darryl Owens, head of district transportation.

Officials say suspects allegedly used a fire extinguisher to break into the districts transportation office, and stole keys to the cars.

The thieves left much damage in their wake, not just broken doors and doorjambs inside the building but they completely dismantled pieces of the fence that was guarding the cars.

Owens says that's just the start of what happened last night. He says, the thieves then went for a joyride into Beaufort County.

"The information I received from the Port Royal police is that they observed one of the vehicles on a high-speed chase last evening, and they actually apprehended for occupants of that vehicle, three of whom were juveniles and one adult."

The car found in Port Royal is said to be in bad shape, but what about the other three cars where are they? Owens says they found two more.

"Another was discovered in the old part of Honey Hill Plantation, another that was discovered on Bees Creek Road, and the fourth vehicle, its still undetermined where its location is."

Owens says all in all the damage could reach up to $30,000, an expensive heist that officials tried to prevent.

"Just recently we had our cameras, added some additional cameras over here, we added a fence to secure the vehicles, we added additional lighting, and with all of those proactive measures in place, it was still not a deterrent for a thief."

Owens says its unclear if any more suspects were involved, but he tells NEWS 3 the district will press charges.
