Armstrong Picked to Win the Peach Belt (Softball)

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Armstrong Atlantic State University softball squad has been picked to repeat as Peach Belt Conference champions in a preseason poll of the league's coaches for the upcoming 2014 season, released today by league officials.

The two-time defending regular season champions, Armstrong received nine of a possible 11 first-place votes and 109 votes overall, out-pointing North Georgia (98) and Columbus State (91) in the poll ranking. Georgia College (77) was picked to finish fourth, followed by Flagler (74), Francis Marion (61), USC Aiken (59) and Lander (40).

Georgia Southwestern (36) was picked ninth, followed by Georgia Regents (formerly Augusta State) (31), Young Harris (29) and UNC Pembroke (20).

The Pirates return nine players from last season's squad that finished 44-10-1 overall and advanced to the NCAA DII World Series for the first time in program history. Armstrong finished as a national semifinalist and are led by reigning PBC Player of the Year shortstopAlexis Mercer and NFCA All-American third baseman Kacie Patterson heading into the 2014 season. Both players were named PBC Preseason All-Conference by the league yesterday.

Armstrong opens up the 2014 season on Saturday, February 1st, hosting Mount Olive at 8:30 a.m. and Lee University at 2:30 p.m. at the Armstrong Softball Field.
