SC Boy Rescued from Well, Estimated More Than 150 Feet Deep

GREER, S.C. -

An 11 year old Greenville County boy is recovering after emergency officials pulled him from a well said to be more than 150 feet deep.

The boy fell into the well Tuesday evening while with a friend.

Our sister station, WSPA, covered the story and discovered that the Emery Howard and his friend were playing on the porch of an abandoned  home when he jumped and fell through the porch into a well hidden underneath.

"He jumped on the board and he crashed all the way through to the water...I thought he was going to die," said the victim's 12 year old friend, Larry Lindsey.

Shortly afterwards, Lindsey ran for help.  An emergency crew battled time and dropping temperatures to reach the boy. After a lot of effort, two firefighters were able to pull the boy from the tight space, said to be only about three feet wide.

"When the rescuer got to him, he could see that he was in water up to his shoulders...in a lot of pain....of course cold and wet," said a sheriff's official.

The boy was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia and a fractured arm. Officials say otherwise he's doing fine.
