MIDDLESEX, N.C. -

Charges have been dropped against a Middlesex man who shot two men who were trying to rob him.

On Jan. 11, Johnston County deputies said 29-year-old Jerome Bernard Neal shot 18-year-old Darrick Hagans and 19-year-old Kwami Jones while they were attempting to rob him and "other individuals who were visiting in his residence."

Hagans was pronounced dead at the scene and Jones was transported to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Neal was initially charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, but the Johnston County District Attorney's Office dismissed the murder and attempted murder charges Tuesday on grounds that he acted in self-defense.

The possession of a firearm by a felon charge still stands.
