Sheriff's Office Warns Residents About New Utility Related Scam

The Effingham County Sheriff's office warns Georgia Power customers that scammers are busy. This time the scammers are visiting the homes of power customers and pretending to be Georgia Power Employees.

What follows is part of a release that the Sheriff's Office wants shared with residents:

"The imposters say the customer has a past due balance, and in order to prevent shutoff, they must purchase a pre-paid card by providing credit and debit account information.A real company employee would never ask a customer to do this. If a customer's account ever became past due, the person would receive a prerecorded message that gives a phone number they can call to find out about their account."

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office says if you think you have received calls or visits from a scam artist, you can call Georgia Power's 24 hour customer service line at 888-660-5890.
