SPARTANBURG, SC -

(WSPA) A Spartanburg man has been charged with attempted murder less than a week after being arrested for neglect of seven children in his home.

Sheriff's deputies say Mark Shannon Winkler, 40, held a bayonet to his mother's throat and then stabbed her in the stomach with a sword Tuesday afternoon.

Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home on Gray Street around 3:30 p.m. Winkler was having an argument with his wife over the medication lorazepam. Winkler took 15 of the pills according to the SCSO incident report.

Winkler then entered his mother's bedroom carrying a bayonet and sword. The victim says Winkler pushed the sword into her stomach, leaving a puncture wound.

Winkler's wife was able to get the bayonet and sword away from the suspect and the weapons were turned over to deputies when they arrived.

Both Winkler and the victim refused treatment from emergency medical services.

A judge found probable cause to charge Winkler with attempted murder. He's being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center on $20,000 bond.
