Truck driver charged after collision with Johnson Co. bus

WILSON MILLS, N.C. -

The driver of a tractor trailer is was charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision and failing to wear a seat belt after colliding with a Johnston County school bus Wednesday morning.

The truck driver, Kenneth Green II, in critical but stable condition at WakeMed after the accident, officials said.

Bus 63 was on the way to Smithfield Middle School when it collided with a tractor-trailer on U.S. 70 east of Highway 42 near Industrial Drive in Johnston County.

An investigation revealed the school bus driver activated the amber flashing lights of the bus approximately a half mile from the location of the bus stop on U.S. 70.  Authorities said as the bus came to a stop, the tractor trailer struck the rear of the bus.

Reports from the scene indicate that seven children, the bus driver and tractor-trailer driver were injured and transported to the hospital. But some parents had their children transported after arriving at the scene.

Only one child suffered minor injuries.

"Some parents decided after they arrived to have their children transported," Johnston County Schools spokeswoman Tracey Peedin Jones said.

Witnesses said weather might have been a factor in the accident.

"It was really foggy outside, turned the flashers on, come and get into the turn lane to turn into the complex, and the truck came up from behind it, just never saw it coming," said witness Grey Basinger.

Thirteen were on board at the time of the incident.

Parents said they would like the bus stop moved off the busy highway.

Dennis Venable said this morning's accident was a good example of why extra precautions need to be made.

"I think a lot of times they (the school system) take precautions as best they can, but sometimes I think they need to kind of push that a little bit stronger," Venable said.

The school system said all of their safety systems worked as intended.
