ATHENS, Ga. -

Florida State defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has been hired to the same position at the University of Georgia.

The move was announced via news release shortly before 4:45 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

"I'm ecstatic," said Bulldogs' head coach Mark Richt.

Last season was Pruitt's first at Florida State, where he coached defensive backs as well. The Seminoles led the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 12.1 points per game, and third in total defense, allowing 281.4 yards per game.

"This is an outstanding professional and personal opportunity," Pruitt said in a release. "I'm looking forward to meeting the current players and getting on the road to visit with recruits."

Prior to Florida State, Pruitt coached at Alabama from 2007-12, serving as defensive backs coach from 2010-12.

Pruitt began his coaching career in 1999 as DB coach at the University of West Alabama. He then was an assistant to his father, Dale Pruitt, at Fort Payne (Ala.) High and Plainview (Ala.) High, before becoming an assistant at Hoover High from 2004-06.
