BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. -

UPDATE: Donald Franklin Billet, 84, of Hilton Head Island, was pronounced dead at the scene of a car accident this morning, according to Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.

South Carolina Highway Patrol says the two car crash on Highway 278 in Bluffton, by St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, happened at 9:42 a.m.

According to Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly, a 2000 Lexus and a 2005 Dodge collided, killing the driver of the Lexus. Wimberly says the driver was wearing a seat belt. She says the driver of the Dodge was a Bluffton man, who sustained unknown injuries.

The investigation is being handled by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, but sheriff's office spokesperson Sgt. Robin McIntosh says the man who was killed may have had a medical condition which caused him to lose consciousness as he driving.

McIntosh says the man veered across the median and struck another car, colliding head-on.
