GOLDSBORO, N.C. -

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said on Tuesday it believes two teens were arguing before they both committed suicide.

Wayne County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the area of the Little River Bridge on Capps Bridge Road around 3:30 p.m. Monday when they found two teenagers with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Rosewood High School student Spenser Terry Garrison, 16, was found dead in a pickup truck parked alongside Little River Bridge. His girlfriend, 15-year-old Malia K. Porter, was found in very poor condition, authorities said, and was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where she died early on Tuesday morning.

The Sheriff's Office said they believe the couple had been arguing in the moments leading up to the shootings.  Authorities found only one gun at the scene, a .22 caliber and they believe Garrison shot himself first. A witness in the area said they saw Porter shoot herself.

Vigils for the two teens took place on both Monday and Tuesday nights at Rosewood High School and at the scene of the tragedy.

Those who knew the students call what happened a complete shock.

"I miss him. I still feel like I could go to his house and see him. It's so unreal," said classmate Tyler Thompson. "I feel like, if he would have talked to any of his friends before he did it, it could have easily been stopped, like, I could have talked him out of it.  Anybody could have talked him out of it."

"Malia, she was a fighter," said friend Jana Foote. "And she wouldn't want us to do anything different than that and we want to keep her memory alive out here forever."

A witness told the Goldsboro Daily News that the pickup truck had been seen at the location of the shooting multiple times on Monday.

Grief counselors and area pastors are offering support for the students.  The Bridge Church, which has campuses in Goldsboro and Princeton, is offering support services on Wednesday night at 7:00.  You can find more information here.
