GREENSBORO, N.C. -

A South Carolina man is due in court on charges he killed a 7-year-old Greensboro girl more than two decades ago.

Guilford County jail records show 52-year-old Donald Preston Ferguson of Spartanburg, S.C., was due to appear in court Monday afternoon. He is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sex offense in connection with the death of Shalonda Poole in 1990.

The girl's body was found behind an elementary school. Police say she had been assaulted and strangled. Police say Ferguson left the Greensboro area the month after the girl disappeared from her home.

Ferguson was convicted in a sexual assault case in Spartanburg and was released from a South Carolina prison in 1997. He was on probation at the time of his arrest this week.
