UPDATE:Former Pooler Police Officer And City Councilman Indicted

Posted: Updated:

A former Pooler City Councilman and Police Officer is now under federal indictment.

John Stanley, better known as "Billy" to folks in Pooler is facing conspiracy charges.

Sources tell News 3 Stanley was connected to a home that was busted by Pooler Police and the FBI for selling pills, unregistered liquor and was known as an illegal gambling spot.

Agents took thousands in pills, guns and almost $100,000 in cash from that home back in 2011.

The owner of the home, Donald Fowler, his wife Martha and his son Donald were all arrested in that sting.

They are awaiting trial.

A former Pooler Police Officer has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to drug conspiracy.

John William Stanley, 46, is charged with aiding and abetting in connection with the illegal possession and distribution of numerous controlled substances.

U.S. Attorney Edward Tarver says Stanley helped the conspirators avoid capture and helped conceal their crimes instead of reporting them.

At the time he was charged, Stanley was an officer with the Pooler Police Department, Tarver said.

"Those charged with enforcing the law are not above it. This office remains committed, with our law enforcement partners, to prosecuting public corruption, so that the citizens of this district can be confident in the true loyalties of those sworn to protect and defend them," said Tarver.

No initial appearance in court has been scheduled.

The most serious of the charges against Stanley carries a 20-year maximum prison sentence.
