WSAV Crime Tracker - Reported Rapes Rise

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA -

It's a crime that was reported to Metro Police in 2013 in numbers nearly double those of the year before -- the highest numbers reported in the last six years -- but it's a crime that could be committed far more than even those numbers show. When talking about the crime of rape -- experts will tell you it's one of, if not the most under-reported crimes that exists. Metro police recorded 48 rapes in their crime statistics for 2013 through December 28th. In 2012 - the number was only 25.

The rise occurred across the Metro area with each of the five precincts seeing more reported incidents.

But Rape Crisis Center Director Kesha Gibson-Carter says the number of incidents was even higher than those reported to authorities, "Rape is the most under-reported crime that a person could experience - primarily because often times when it comes to rape - the individual knows the assailant - they know who did this to them. Sometimes it's a friend, sometimes it could be a family member or a partner relationship and so those are some of the factors that make it increasingly difficult to report rape."

But she says many victims who are reluctant to report the crime to authorities - still seek help from the Rape Crisis Center. Though metro had 48 reported incidents in 2013 - Gibson-Carter says the Rape Crisis Center helped 100 victims. In 2012 - when Metro had 25 reports - the Rape Crisis Center helped 77.

Gibson-Carter believes awareness is responsible for much of the rise in reporting, "A high majority of the instances were actually females under the age of 17 and so I would like to think that it's because of the promotion of our prevention efforts and the message of our mission that we've been pushing at our local schools as well as at our college campuses - which provides for encouragement and confidence for those victims to reach out to the officials for protection as well as reporting."

If you would like to help the Rape Crisis Center in their efforts - they've set up a text to donate program. Simply text: safe to 41444 you will be taken to a website to input your credit card information to make a donation.
