Auburn run game overshadows dangerous passing game

Posted: Updated:
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -

The Auburn Tigers ridden one of the nation's strongest rushing attacks all the way to Pasadena, but the Tigers can throw it too, when needed.

They just haven't needed to.

"We do feel good about our passing game even though we haven't passed the football a lot the second half of the year," said head coach Gus Malzahn. "We haven't had to. But we do have a lot of confidence in Nick Marshall."

That Auburn passing game is flying under the radar, but still, the Florida State Seminoles may be overlooking it just a bit.

"Much hasn't been said because they haven't passed the ball much," said senior linebacker Telvin Smith. "They're going to run the ball. They're a run-the-football team. I think when they try to throw the ball it's more of a trick play or something like that. He's a great quarterback."

Make no mistake, Auburn does make its money on the ground, and Malzahn knows that. A key component of his offense is creating confusion within the defense.

"Coaching is about trying to keep people off balance and try to keep them guessing," Malzahn said. "Try to make their keys lie to them and just keep them off balance."

Malzahn's offense has a lot of moving parts, both before and immediately following the snap.

"You have to have eye discipline," said Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher. "Any time you have moving parts, any time you bring something in front of you, just like when you're driving, if somebody flashes a hand in front of you while you're driving down the road, it makes you blink. Then at the same time, they become very physical with how they play. You get yourself out of position and they knock you out of the way."

So, in conclusion, Auburn is going to run the ball, run the ball, then run the ball again, until the Seminoles prove they can stop it.

"That's their mindset, and that's also my mindset," said Auburn junior running back Tre Mason. "I don't care if you put thirteen people on the field, we're going to find a way to get it done."
