SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

A Smithfield infant is once again breathing without the assistance of a ventilator after being on life support since late December.

Two-month-old Jaxen Jones was placed on life support after being found unresponsive and not breathing Dec. 27 on Caswell Street in Smithfield.

The child's father, Johnathan Michael Jones, was charged with intentional child abuse and inflicting serious injury. His bond was initially set at $200,000, but that was raised to $400,000 due to the extent of the infant's injuries.

A GoFundMe page was created for Jaxen to raise $5,000 to help his family with medical expenses. According the the page, Jaxen was diagnosed with severe shaking baby syndrome, and he may have brain damage and could be blind.

Jaxen was taken off the ventilator Friday and is breathing on his own.

Rough Weather Causes Tree To Collapse onto House

Our spate of nasty spring weather this weekend didn't just bring rain into the picture. In some parts of our immediate area wind was also a major part of the weather scene. A good example of this is the house in Liberty County that was walloped by a tree. Apparently the house, located in the 4700 block of East Ogelthrope Highway was damaged when a massive tree fell on it. Neighbors believe heavy winds caused the tree to topple onto the building. The good news here is no one was injured. But t...
