Beaufort "Tagging" Suspect Obtained

BEAUFORT, S.C. -

Street artwork is all over downtown Beaufort, but not the kind you might think.

"It's what they call tagging, small little symbols on signs and poles," said Chief Matt Clancy, Beaufort Police Department. 

Tags have been popping up all over town, 32 different places have been counted so far, and while the chief says it's not a trend, it's something everyone should watch out for.

"It's not something we want to have take hold, it's just not a good thing."

The good news, police say the person responsible for all that tagging has been nabbed.

"Most of it is attributed to a juvenile, who for whatever reason had his magic marker, and I don't know wanted to make their mark on the world or whatever."

Police say a 15 year-old suspect could be charged for all of the vandalism and the case is currently in family court. Investigators believe he's also connected to the graffiti at Ribaut lanes last month. Mayor Billy Kettering says he should be responsible for cleaning it all up.

"The last thing I'd do is take him in front of the judge. I'd just give him a steel brush and some turpentine and say see you when you're finished."

No word yet on what happened in court, and the investigation may not be over. Chief Clancy says more vandals may be out there.

"It's something that's so simple, someone could be doing it as we speak. It's just something that we are going to have to keep an eye on."
