New Year's aerial parade for sick children

Posted: Updated:
A local nonprofit is flying high into the New Year to help dozens of sick and injured kids. Any other day these kids would be stuck in a hospital or in and out of the doctors' office.

On Wednesday, "Free to Be Me" aimed to life their spirits. Planes of various styles fly over Vidant's Children's Hospital. Patients like Zion Harris looked out their window with awe.

“He's been here for 15 days. Any little bit of excitement is good for him since he's so little.” Zion’s grandmother Cynthia Harris said.

The holidays were rather tough for the Harris family. Zion was diagnosed with leukemia some time ago, but his family says this definitely put him in better spirits.

"Seeing the little kids get this experience is just the most amazing feeling to me ever." Catherine Armstrong said.

Just north of the hospital in an airport hanger, about 50 other children rang in the New Year in a different way. They got an up close look at the planes taking part in the parade; included was 22-month-old Liberty Bullock.

"Liberty was diagnosed with neuro blastoma cancer, and she is now 22-months-old and she's suffering from a syndrome which she developed from the cancer." Tesha Bullock said.

Ever since liberty was diagnosed, non-profits aided her family. Liberty's father, Corey says he's grateful for all they've done. "Events like this they can get your mind of it. I couldn't ask for anything better."
