Beaufort Co.: Free Tax Preparation Sites Begin Jan. 21

The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program intends to prepare more than 2,500 tax returns in 2014 for local working individuals and families in the Lowcountry. The VITA program returns nearly $3.2 million dollars back into the pockets of our residents and saves them more than $400,000 in tax preparation fees.


VITA sites will begin opening January 21, 2014 and all services are free. Sites locations and times are as follows:


Beaufort Library, 311 Scott Street, Beaufort,(opens Mon., January 27th), Mondays: 10:30-4 p.m. Thursdays: 1:30-7 p.m.

Bluffton Library, 120 Palmetto Way, Bluffton, (opens Mon., January 27th), Mondays: 2-7 p.m.

St. Helena Library, 6355 Jonathan Francis Sr Rd, St Helena, (opens Mon., January 27th), Mondays: 1:30-7 p.m.

SCBT, 1121 Boundary St, Beaufort, (opens Tues., January 21st), Tuesdays: 9-noon

Piggly Wiggly, 1347 Ribaut Road, Port Royal (opens Tues., January 21st), Tuesdays: 1-5 p.m.

United Way, Jasper County, Gray's Hwy (EMS Bldg), Ridgeland, (opens Wed., January 22nd), Wednesdays: 10-4 p.m.

Hilton Head Recreation Center, 20 Wilborn Road, Hilton Head Is, (opens Thurs., January 23rd), Thursdays: 6-9 p.m.

Piggly Wiggly, 1900 Boundary St, Beaufort, (opens Fri., January 24th), Fridays: 9-noon

St Paul Baptist Church, 22 St Paul Church Rd, Beaufort, (opens Fri., January 24th), Fridays: 1-4 p.m.

Lobeco Library, 1862 Trask Parkway, Lobeco, (opens Sat., January 25th), Saturdays: 11-3 p.m.

USCB-South Campus, 1 University Blvd., Bluffton, (opens Sat., January 25th), Saturdays: 9-12:30 p.m.


Taxpayers should bring the following to the tax preparation site:


  • A complete copy of last year's return (not required but helpful to the tax preparer)
  • All 2013 informational statements, including but not limited to:

-     Wage statements - Form(s) W-2

-­     Interest and dividend statements - Form(s) 1099INT and 1099DIV

-     Mortgage interest statements - Form(s) 1098

-     Pension and social security statements - Form(s) 1099R and SSA-1099

-     Tuition payments statements - Form(s) 1098-T

-     Property tax receipt(s) for any property taxes paid in 2013

  • Information on deductions
  • Copies of Social Security Card(s)
  • Bank account number and routing number to deposit your refund
  • Valid Picture ID
