Town of Bluffton Food Drive to Replenish Area Food Banks

BLUFFTON, S.C. -

The town of Bluffton is getting into the spirit of the holidays, after, the holidays, taking food donations to support local non-profits.

"During the Christmas season there is a lot of buzz to help, to be very mindful of your neighbors and charities, and people that may need a little helping hand. But come January, February, and March, it goes quiet. And during that quietness is when our local charities, and our neighbors are when they are the most challenged," said town spokesperson, Debbie Szpanka.

One of the charities that will benefit from these collections is Bluffton Self Help.

"Without food drives we wouldn't be able to give out food to the people that need it, so every food drive's important. We are thrilled to be working with the town of Bluffton and getting food from that food drive.it builds awareness that its cold and these people need food and soups to keep their bodies warm," said executive director, Lili Coleman.

And with unemployment benefits ending this week, Self Help is bracing to feed even more people in 2014.

"We really don't know yet, how many people we are going to get because of unemployment cuts, but we've been growing at least 20-40% every year, so I mean it hasn't stopped and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and more people need the services,"said Coleman.

The food drive will run through the end of January. Right now Bluffton Self Help and the Church of the Cross food bank are the only ones participating.

If you are with a local food bank and would like to participate please call Debbie Szpanka 843.706.4534.

If you'd like to donate just drop off non-perishables at Town Hall Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm
