Messinger Joins First District Congressional Race

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA -

Democrat Leslie Messinger made it official on Friday that she will be running in the 2014 U.S. Congressional race for Georgia's 1st District.

Messinger is running for the seat being vacated by 11 term Republican Jack Kingston, who is seeking a seat in the U.S. senate.

The two faced each other in the 2012 election with Kingston winning, but Messinger gaining more votes than any of his previous contenders-- thanks in part to newly drawn district lines.

Messinger sent me an e-mail earlier today confirming her decision.  "After much encouragement and support from the base of voters I acquired from my 2012 campaign and the many new supporters that I am continuing to acquire since the election, I am going to do what would be in the best interest of the citizens in the 1st District," she said.

Messinger's campaign also took a shot at the five Republicans who have already announced that they are seeking the seat-- calling them " mirror image" GOP and Tea Party candidates who are competing on the basis of who is "the Most Conservative."

Republicans who have announced that they are running include Buddy Carter, Jeff Chapman, Bob Johnson, Darwin Carter, and John McCallum.
