Police: 3 from NY used fake checks on Christmas Eve at Opelika retailers

Posted: Updated:
OPELIKA, Ala. - Opelika police have arrested three people for using fake checks at area retail stores on Christmas Eve.

Anias Ameglee, Dharrione Newton and Kaleah Brewington were traveling from Florida to New York City when they stopped in Opelika, Capt. Bruce DeLong of the Opelika Police Department tells News 3. The three successfully made purchases twice at Kohl's and once at Target on Tuesday using fake American Express traveler's cheques. They were arrested after returning to Target a second time.

"They were using counterfeit $100 travelers checks," said Capt. DeLong. "Typically in these situations what will be done is they will pass the counterfeit travelers check, but small items with relatively low dollar value, and then pocket the cash."

Ameglee, 20, of Queens, and Brewington, 18, of Brooklyn, are each facing two charges after shopping once at Target and once at Kohl's. Newton, 26, also of Brooklyn, faces four charges for being at each of the crimes. All are facing charges for second degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument.

Police could not initially say why the three were in Opelika or had long they had been in Alabama. It was not clear how much money or merchandise they were retrieved from the stores before their arrest.

Police offer advice if the same situation happens to your business.

"Try and keep the individual there if they can without arising suspicion," said Capt. DeLong. "Have the supervisors or managers contact the police department so they can respond. Definitely do a police report that way it gets into our system, so if we are already conducting an investigation or another agency from another part of the state or country is doing the same, we may be able to get leads on these individuals."

The case remains under investigation and federal investigations may be brought on if the three are found to have used fake checks in other states during their travels.

News Three's James Brierton also contributed to this report.
