November unemployment rate for Columbus lowest since 2008

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

Metro Columbus’ unemployment rate decreased to 7.6 percent in November, down seven-tenths of a percentage point from 8.3 percent in October. This is the lowest the rate has been since it was 7.1 percent in November 2008. The rate was also 8.3 percent in November a year ago, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

The rate declined in November primarily because the number of jobs increased and the number of unemployed people fell.

Metro Columbus employers added 900 jobs in November, increasing the number of jobs to 121,200, up by 0.8 percent, from 120,300 in October. Most of the new jobs were added in trade, transportation and warehousing, finance and insurance, and other service-related industries.

Over the year, jobs were up by 500, or 0.4 percent, from 120,700 in November 2012. The job gains came mostly in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, financial services, and retail trade.

The unemployment rate in the River Valley region decreased to 8.7 percent in November, down eight-tenths of a percentage point from 9.5 percent in October. The rate was 9.4 percent in November a year ago. The River Valley region includes Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster counties.
